« Je suis peintre et sculpteur. Si la sculpture prend de plus en plus en place dans ma vie, la peinture demeure un médium avec lequel je me sens bien. J’aime le contact avec le canevas, je le perçois comme un espace infini où tout est à bâtir, à raconter. Quelque part, quand je peins, je sculpte. Je creuse le fond de la toile, j’ouvre l’avant-plan, j’y installe mes personnages. Si je dessine un visage, je pense toujours à l’arrière de la tête, même si on ne la voit pas. Si je peins un buste, j’imagine le dos du personnage. Je peins avec tout mon corps. J’avance vers ma toile, je recule, j’y retourne. Mon geste est large, souvent vigoureux, presque sauvage même parfois. Peindre est libérateur. Puis, je me dépose ensuite avec l’argile, dans la lenteur, la minutie et la patience. Sculpter est un long processus qui demande beaucoup de concentration. Quand je travaille mes armatures, je suis mathématicien et ingénieur. Je calcule, je visualise, je mesure, je teste. J’ouvre ensuite un sac d’argile et je deviens poète. L’argile répond à la caresse. Je ne la bouscule pas, je l’écoute, je la regarde et quand elle m’invite, je la touche. J’entre dans un état presque second. Sculpter est une méditation. »
"I am a painter and a sculptor. While sculpture is taking up more and more space in my life, painting remains a medium that I feel deeply connected to. I love the contact with the canvas, I see it as an infinite space where everything is yet to be built, to be told. In a way, when I paint, I sculpt. I dig into the background of the canvas, I open up the foreground, I place my characters within it. If I draw a face, I always think about the back of the head, even if it’s not visible. If I paint a torso, I imagine the character’s back. I paint with my whole body. I move toward the canvas, I step back, then return to it. My gestures are broad, often vigorous, even wild at times. Painting is liberating.
Then I settle into working with clay in slowness, precision, and patience. Sculpting is a long process that demands deep concentration. When I work on my armatures, I become a mathematician and an engineer. I calculate, visualize, measure, and test. Then I open a bag of clay, and I become a poet. Clay responds to a caress. I don’t rush it, I listen, I observe, and when it invites me, I touch it. I enter an almost altered state. Sculpting is a meditation."
